When people embrace it expresses how strongly the separation was felt, how much they have longed to be together. Here we are made aware of the power of touch, which within the shortest time span can either connect people or injure them.
Eye-contact is not enough then, nor any facial expression, nor taking the other’s hands in yours. Complete separation can only be cancelled out by closest proximity, by the greatest possible bodily contact.
When two people embrace, they are both defenceless. They allow their freedom of movement to be restricted by the other; they voluntarily give themselves to one another.
An embrace is a declaration of peace, we yield ourselves with empty hands to the other’s embrace, offering each other this gesture of trust.
